16 Brits Feared Missing in Haiti
It is being reported that in the wake of the Haiti quake at least 16 Brits have been reported missing as the massive search for survivors continues in Port-au-Prince. Aid agencies have already been passing along the word that they are out of several essential supplies as relief efforts begin to come in from outside.
UK rescue teams will be landing in Haiti today and it is being reported that up to 500,000 people have been killed by the devastating earthquake. At the moment vital needs include food, clean water, and medical supplies which are growing scarce in the capital.
The capital, now in ruins, has bodies of the dead and injured scattered all around it. Almost half of 32 Brits who are known residents of the area are said to have still not contacted the UK embassy in Haiti. Today, the four man team arriving as representatives of the British government landed in the Dominican Republic accompanied by 71 rescue specialists to provide much needed aid, equipment, and support.
The Red Cross has said that the number of individuals requiring aid could be at least 3 million, which is a third of Haiti’s population. The UK has been among the first to respond in the disaster and officials in Haiti have said they are doing their part of aid the Haitian government.
The quake hit in the evening on Tuesday at a 7.0 on the scale and since then has left devastating effects across the capital and other parts of Haiti. International aid has been arriving since Wednesday and will continue to be provided in the wake of the disaster.
So far there has been no further news on the 16 Brits still missing, but they are known to have been residing in Haiti at the time of the quake.
