British UN Worker in Haiti Feared Dead After One Week Missing
Missing British national, 59 year old Ann Barnes, has been missing since Tuesday. The missing woman’s family are beginning to grow concerned as no news has surfaced regarding the UN worker’s whereabouts. Ann Barnes, who lived and worked in Haiti, on behalf of the UN was originally from Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, and went missing after the devastating 7.0 earthquake in Haiti.
Ann Barnes is believed to have been working on the second floor of the UN headquarters when the building collapsed during the quake, but as of yet there has been no confirmation of her death. Ann has been missing since last Tuesday when the earthquake struck Port-au-Prince, the nation’s capital.
As the amount of devastation begins to become clear, Ms Barnes’ sister, Irene Marquet, stated that she believes her sister was one of the causalities, but that it was difficult having no information to go on at all. Ms. Marquet continued saying that she wanted to remain hopeful but having no information about her sister for almost a week now made things difficult.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office confirmed that among the 50,000 missing, one was in fact a British UN aid worker, but that they would not give out the woman’s name. Ms. Barnes has been employed by the UN for almost 20 years working in nations such as Mozambique, the Congo, and Sierra Leone.
Currently, she was stationed in Haiti as a personal assistant to the police commissioner. Ann’s sister received an email from the woman’s partner confirming that Ann was definitely in the building when it came down.
Currently the total number of UN workers gone missing in the wake of such devastation has climbed to 200 so far 36 of them have been removed from the missing persons list and confirmed dead. The Red Cross is estimating that total death tolls could be higher than 50,000 people.
